Web Hosting Information

To set up a web page one generally has to buy a virtual machine or buy space on a shared web host. Providing those web hosting servers to the public is a multimillion dollar business.

A related business is evaluating the web hosting industry. The dirty little secrete is that the evaluations are not always just evaluations. Sometimes they are advertisements disguised as evaluations.

To try and avoid confussion I am going to relate my experiances with the web hosting industry.

For years I used a company called "Lunar-pages" and was relatively happy with their performance. However, they sold out to a larger company in 2011 and I became dissatisfied. At that time I started searching for a new web hosting company.

I am web proficent so the thrust of my search was for inexpensive, no or low support hosting companys. This is not as easy as it was a few years ago when I went through the same process. I think the reason for this is that most web hosting companies offer virtual machines and most people that are sophisticated enough to look for a no support solution usually just run their own virtual server. Consequently it is difficult to fine a shared host that has SSH shell support. My search started with no support web hosting and went to minimal or limited support web hosting and was limited to hosting companies that had servers in the U.S. I then went on to 1 dollar a month and free web host still looking for low or not support.

One factor I did not look at was domain name registration. I have a domain name registration site and assume that you have one too. Also, the following comparison only includes comparison of the mid-rang plan on each Web server. This usually has over a 10Gb Disk Space and 100MG bandwidth, over 10 sub-domains and 10 add on domains

Here is what I found.
